Lot of 2. Early rare hard-cover books. 1) is the "The Subterranean World" by Dr. George Hartwig, published by Scribner, Wellford & Co. Of New York, 1871. 522 pages, with some 67 unique maps and woodcut illustrations regarding fossils, caverns, and earthquake lithograph, and many others, all listed on the opening pages. Contents illuminate such subjects such as Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Geologic Evolutions, Destruction of Herculaneum and Pompeii, Ice Caves and Wind Holes, 39 chapters total. 2) is titled "Underground or Life Below the Surface." The subtitle below reads "Incidents and Accidents." This book is authored by Thomas W. Knox, published by J.B. Burr, Hyde & Co. Chicago, 1873. A 942 page tome, also illustrated with various lithographs, woodcuts, etc. This book appears to be darker, with such chapter titles as "Accidents in Shafts," Explosions in Mines," "Dungeons," "The Bastile," The Parisian Sewers," and many more.
