Western Sioux Pipe Tomahawk c. 1870
The lot features a classic authentic Western Plains pipe tomahawk dating to circa 1870’s from the Sioux Native American Indians. The piece shows an exceptional blacksmith hand-forged Western style head with wide, flaring blade and tall pipe bowl. The solid wood haft handle is adorned with brass trade tacks in a linear pattern along with a long wrap of old copper telegraph wire. Above the gripping area shows a pierced hole holding a dangle drop tied with Indian tanned hide holding and old thimble, a few trade ribbons strips and four porcupine quilled hide fringes with rolled tin jingle cones having plumes of feathers. The head is blacksmith hand-forged from an old rifle barrel with the cut rifling still visible inside the long pipe bowl. The head shows the folded signs of blacksmithing. The war club shows a nice even, mellow patina from much age and use overall with a rich color over the copper wiring and brass tacks and mellow coloring on the tomahawk head. Provenance: From the ex-collection of the Cyrus Eaton Estate from London, England. The head measures 9.5” by 4” across the blade and the piece is 22” overall.
