The original Western Pacific Railroad Company was established in 1865 to build the westernmost portion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and was absorbed into Central Pacific Railroad in 1870 [Ref: Poor’s Manual of Railroads, 1875-1876, p. 752]. The second Western Pacific Railroad, which used this lantern, operated from 1903-1983. The dates on this lantern correspond to the early decades of the Western Pacific Railroad’s revival. Lantern stands 9” tall, without bail. “Adlake/ Kero” is embossed around the outer rim of the lid’s ventilator top. The lower portion of the lid is hand embossed “W.P. RR”. Lantern includes a 3.5” tall clear globe embossed “CNX/ Adlake Kero”. The globe bottom bears multiple small chips, as does the upper rim of the globe. Wire cage. The drop-in burner is embossed “No. 300 USF Long Time Burning Oil Only” and the wick guard, which still surrounds a cloth wick, is engraved “Adlake 300” on one side. The bottom of the pot is embossed “Adlake – Kero 4-48/ U.S.A./ 1415633/ 1415634-1415635/ 1660194/ Canada/ 1921-1922/ Pats Pending”. Metal body, very little rust on bail. - Jacobitz Collection -59667
