Western Mono Coiled Cooking Basket
Circa 1900
Height 8 3/4 in. Diameter 16 3/4 in.

This deep bowl with wide flaring sides is decorated with a horizontal zigzag pattern interrupted by vertical zigzag bands. A narrow band of small rectangles decorates the rim. "Large bowls were used for feasts. Often acorn soup would be cooked in smaller baskets and then served in a larger bowl. Western Mono and Yokuts weaving is quite similar. There are some differences in the design used, and the Western Mono will often break the horizontal banding with vertical lines of designs. In addition, while Yokuts weavers will invariably weave a bowl on the inside face and to the right, Western Mono weavers will work on either face and in either direction."

Provenance
Bonhams and Butterfields, Sale 7477E, Lot 3190, December 8, 2003.
