$10,000. No. X1023, issued to famous industrialist John D. Rockefeller (not signed by him) in 1917. Punch cancelled. John D. Rockefeller (1839–1937) was an American industrialist and philanthropist who founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870, which became the world's largest oil refiner and a defining example of early corporate monopoly. His business practices led to the rise of antitrust laws in the United States, including the landmark breakup of Standard Oil in 1911. Later in life, Rockefeller devoted much of his wealth to philanthropy, establishing major institutions such as the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Foundation.
