Fresh off his Julian Petroleum fiasco (a huge money raiser but little oil), C.C. Julian proclaimed his Western Lead as his new baby. "A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR SILVER- LEAD MINE" was his pitch, and Julian was a great money raiser. "Death Valley and her Hidden Treasure- That's my baby now!". The mine was located in Titus Canyon and a townsite was laid out called Leadfield. Julian's crew graded a road up the canyon to the mine in six days. They then began a road over the Grapevine's to Beatty. After this, Julian brought a whole trainload of investors to the mine. He was able to gin up the stock from it's 10 cent par value to a peak of $3.30 on the Los Angeles Stock Exchange. The Corporations Commissioner then launched an investigation of the company and the stock crashed. The Commission's experts estimated that there was only about 200 tons of ore at the mine with less than 6% lead. What a dud! It turns out that this same property was tried 20 years prior as the Death Valley Consolidated Mining Company run by W.H. Seaman during the Bullfrog rush (Death Valley and the Amargosa, Lingenfelter). This is certificate #17576, issued to C.C. Julian and signed by Julian as president in 1926. Uncanceled.
