The Vera McGinnis Collection
Vera McGinnis was one of the most glamorous & stylish cowgirls and the
first to wear pants in the arena. Vera started riding rodeos in 1912
wearing a corset, as was the custom at that time. After her first relay,
McGinnis tossed the corset going on to design many outfits that had an
enormous influence on the evolution of cowgirl attire. Vera rode with
Cody's Wild West in a 1916 competition with the Miller Bros 101 ranch.
"Following the rodeos or roundups is a hard way to make a livin', and at
best it's a danged slim living". Won trophies in Ireland, France & Belgium
in 1925 in Tex Austin's rodeo. Vera's McGinnis' rodeo career began in 1913
in Salt Lake City, Utah. In her first relay race, her horse crashed into
one of the other contestants leaving Vera in last place with a headache and
a missing tooth. The producers were nevertheless impressed and signed her
up for a rodeo tour of Canada. McGinnis went on to become a champion
cowgirl, Hollywood star, and fashion trendsetter. Her career ended in 1935
with a fall that punctured her lung and broke her hip, neck, back, and most
of her ribs. She was told she would probably die and would definitely never
walk again. She defied the odds by walking out of the hospital....a few
months later.

The following 9 lots are consigned directly by Vera's family and were part
of her personal possessions.
