[West Point] The Official Register of Class of 1 [West Point] The Official Register of Class of 1841
[West Point] The Official Register of Class of 1841 - Signed by Richard Delafield and Joseph Hooker - and Listing Cadets Grant, Longstreet, Doubleday, Hancock, &c ... Pamphlet, entitled "Official Register of the Officers and Cadets of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New-York, June 1841", inscribed in ink on the front to "Judge William A. Hayes with the compliments of Major [Richard] Delafield", 23 pages, 4" by 6.5", and signed on the back cover "J. [Joseph] Hooker." In fine condition. This fascinating version of a future Civil War "Who's Who" lists, in two sections, "Cadets arranged in Order of Merit... as Determined at the General Examination" and "Roll of Cadets Arranged According to Merit in Conduct." Some names which jump out at the modern reader are: Don Carlos Buell, John Fulton Reynolds, Alfred Sully, Abner Doubleday, Richard Brooke Garnett, James Longstreet, William S. Rosecrans, Christopher C. Auger, Ulysses S. Grant, Horatio G. Wright, Rufus Ingalls, Alfred Pleasonton, Simon B. Buckner, and Winfield S. Scott. In the "Offenses against Orders or Regulations," it is noted that Horatio Wright had the least, and Don Carlos Buell the most. A truly remarkable look at the Civil War's greatest leaders; it's like reading their report cards. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
