16"x20 "Watercolour Print, Matted. “West Coast Arbutus” was inspired by a sailing expedition into Desolation Sound a few Summers ago. I was invited to join the ship as guest artist and Workshop Instructor. We spent 5 days in the Sound, sailing, swimming, hiking, kayaking and generally appreciating the spectacular scenery. During one of our hikes, I spent time observing and sketching arbutus trees which lined the rugged coastline. I was fascinated by the way they seemed to perch and lean precariously, with a tenuous hold on their rocky outcrops. The West Coast Arbutus is the only native broad leaved tree in Canada and is distinguished by it's peeling red bark. In this painting, I wanted to show the luminosity of the pale green trunk as it is revealed over the Summer months. ARTIST BIO
Originally from the UK, Zoe studied Fine Art and Illustration in London. Her Arts career took her to Europe, the US and Canada. Zoë's natural flare for colour and movement lured her to the Animation Industry, painting background scenery for classically animated feature films including “Anastasia”. Now a Canadian living in Squamish, BC, she balances her
passion for painting with a career as Art Director for animated film and TV. Zoe is represented by Mountain Galleries, Whistler; is an active member of the Federation of Canadian fArtists; teaches workshops/classes and shows work in
Whistler, Squamish and the lower mainland, Vancouver.
ART STATEMENT
The expressive nature of watercolour continues to fascinate me and allows me to explore new
ideas and themes. It is a way of thinking and problem solving for me. I work in different
mediums but I particularly enjoy a fluid, slightly unpredictable way of using paint whether it is
watercolour, oil or fluid acrylic. My paintings are often in response to a sense of impending
change or at points of transition - a sense that life may not be the same tomorrow. Against a
backdrop of ancient Coast Mountains and Temperate rainforest, I find endless opportunities
to study and document the changing cultural landscape around Squamish and the Sea to Sky
area. I am exploring familiar places that have either changed by development, been
abandoned or remain untouched by progress; places that are controversial, protected,
endangered or that are simply breathtakingly beautiful.
