Handwritten draft letter by Wernher von Braun, unsigned, December 2, 1966, composed in pencil on four 8 x 10.5 pages, with the first page addressed to ‰ÛÏGeorge.‰Û The letter reads, in part: ‰ÛÏReference is made to the document ‰Û÷Manned Space Flight Summary of Roles and Missions Agreements‰Ûª reflecting the decision reached at the Lake Logan retreat and distributed by MSF on October 4, 1966, which is attached for your convenience‰Û_In compliance with this document MSFC has terminated its work in the area of lunar surface traverse planning and Advanced ALSEP, and as consummated an orderly transfer of he work to MSC. The question of specific center assignment of the remaining items involved in Lunar Engineering was left open. In your letter of Nov. 14, 1966‰Û_to Bob Gilruth you suggested that he and I should try to establish areas in which MSFC will continue a responsibility, and how we would handle the interface between the two centers‰Û_I had made a specific proposal to Bob Gilruth what we proposed to transfer to MSC at once, and what we proposed for retention at MSFC‰Û_Retention of some of the work at MSFC is directly related to the following‰Û_questions to which we seem to have no clear answers at this point in time: ‰ÛÓwhich elements of this program will be activated in FY 68, what are the schedule objectives, and what funding level will be available? What equipment shall be developed in-house at MSFC, if objectives will turn out to be more ambitious than the finding levels required to acquire the desired equipment from industrial prime contractors? ‰ÛÓ Will MSF concur with OSSA‰Ûªs suggestion that MSFC take over management responsibility for the Voyager s? If so, will the Voyager program get the go-ahead in FY 68?‰Û_does MSF desire for MSFC to turn such potential MSFC in-house post-Apollo tasks over to MSC at this time?‰Û A secretarial note in the upper right corner of first page states that the letter ‰ÛÏwas never sent out.‰Û In fine condition.
