Werner Schurmann (b.1929) HEAD OF MICHAEL SCOTT stamped with initials and dated [1968] at base cast bronze on a granite plinth, unique 42cm., 16.5in. high including plinth (25cm., 10in. excluding plinth) Provenance: Collection of Michael Scott Esq.; By whom given in the early 1980s to the present owner Exhibited: IELA, Dublin, 1968, catalogue no.118 (lent by Michael Scott Esq.) Michael Scott (1905-1989) was one of Ireland’s foremost architects and supporters of Modernism in the arts. Werner Schurmann is a German sculptor who lived and worked in Ireland during the 1950s and 60s. He studied at the Munich Kuntsakademie, where he met his future wife Gerda Frömel (see Snoddy, p. 171). The couple first visited Ireland in 1953 and settled there in 1956. Schurmann received a number of public commissions for works in German and Irish churches and did illustrations for the Dolmen Press, Dublin. He showed regularly at the Living Art exhibitions in Dublin and with the Independent Artists group. In 1967 Gerda Frömel and Michael Scott held a joint exhibition at the Dawson Gallery; a year later Schurmann completed this bust of Scott. In 1970 he returned to Germany where he ceased practicing as a sculptor in order to pursue a career as an opera singer. (With thanks to the artist for his help in cataloguing this work; also to Oliver and Killian Schurmann).
