Wenzel Friedrich horn chair. Composed of 22 horns and upholstered in Axis deer hide. Completely restored, with original Tiffany glass ball casters. As shown in 1890 Wenzel Friedrich catalog, pages 16 and 17.

Wenzel Friedrich (1827 – 1902) was born in Grünthal, Bohemia in 1827. In his twenties, Friedrich emigrated to Indianola, Texas, settling in San Antonio. After a short stint as a grocery worker, he established himself in the cabinetmaking trade with the skills he learned in his homeland. By 1880, he expanded his business to include horned furniture at a small location on 12 Crockett Street, which was listed in city directories as a manufacturer of horned furniture until 1897.

Within a few short years, his work with horned furniture earned him several awards of merit at prominent events, such as: the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1883, the New Orleans Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition of 1884-85, and the 1886 Southern Exposition at Louisville, Kentucky. While his work was sold throughout the United States and Europe, his popularity expanded as far as Siberia with Kasier Wilhelm I of Bismark as a patron, as well Queen Victoria and the President of France.

Today, Friedrich’s work can be viewed in museums, two of which reside in San Antonio – The Horn Palace and The Buckhorn, the latter of which was founded by his son, Albert Friedrich.
