Welter, Gerhard. DIE MUNZEN DER WELFEN SEIT HEINRICH DEM LOWEN BAND I & II. Klinkhardt & Biermann. Braunschweig. The first two volumes of three published. xi, 543, (5); ix, (1),49, (1); pages. text illustrations, 269 plates of coins. Matching brown leatherette, gilt, dust jackets. near Fine. ex Norman D. Nichol Library. This general catalog describes over 3200 coin types with all years, which could be taken from the collection descriptions Fiala, Knigge and Knyphausen, from all important auctions since 1900 and from the collections known today. The coinage in the periods of bracteates, pfennigs, groschen, tipper coins and the newest coins up to the dissolution of the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Brunswick are described in an individual way adapted to their uniqueness. At the same time, the work provides a table of contents for the collections of the kings of Hanover (Fiala), Knigge and Knyphausen and gives the catalog numbers of these collections for the individual coins. The synoptic tables of the Guelph princes, published for the first time, permit an overview and orientation of the secular and spiritual princes, their lands and lineages that was not previously possible. In the second volume, the author has succeeded in showing as many coin types as possible from the minting period of each mint maker, in the order from the largest to the smallest value. The bracteates are presented contiguously in their historical order and clearly show the deterioration of the style from Henry the Lion to the 15th century. Rarely collected and hardly available coins, such as the coins of the estates in the 14th century, the Kipper and Wipper times and the medieval groschen, were also taken into account. The volume also contains the coins of the Welf bishops of Bremen, Hildesheim, Minden, Osnabrck, Ratzeburg, Verden and Walkenried. The coins depicting the dukes represent a picture book of the Guelph princes. The extensive text section brings in all the mottos of all Guelph coins with the translation of the Latin texts, a list of the naturalized names of the Guelph coins ('nasal bleeds gulden', 'Zwietrachtstaler'), a heraldic section, a geographical map, the planetary symbols as well as country and location information. The illustrations correspond to their numbering in volume one. Lot weight: 6 lbs 4oz. Subject(s): Germanic Coinage.
