lot of 3. First is Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express receipt, 8 Jan. 1867; for two 2 bars of bullion valued at Forty three Hundred and Firty seven 09/100 Dollars. Signed by Henry L. Roff. Harry L. Roff was a Pony Express rider, and is credited with being the first on the east-bound route from Sacramento on April 3 (actually the 4th), 1860. The steamer Antelope carried the mail from San Francisco to Sacramento. She arrived at about 2am in a driving rain, so in nearly total anonymity, Harry Roff was handed the pouch and sped off into the rain and gloom of night. The west-bound mail got back to 'Frisco on the 14th to great fanfare and waiting crowds.

Second receipt is also for bullion, Tucson, AZ, 25 Sept. 1877, this one only worth $350, to M.J. Jacobs & Co., San Francisco. Third item is a blank duplicate Wells, Fargo voucher with pre-printed 186____.

The Thomas Minckler Collection of Western Americana

Condition: First and third excellent; second slightly toned with one hole about a quarter inch at maximum in the "conditions" statement on receipt.
