Lot of 6 pieces including 2 small envelopes, one letter-size envelope (#10 size using today’s standards), and one express label, framed. 1) Handwritten cover with Wells Fargo advertising at top, addressed to R.P. Keating, Esq. in Gold Hill, Nevada. Postmark is 3ct embossed stamp in green oval with profile of George Washington. It probably dates earlier than 1900, possibly 1870s-80s. 2) Second small cover carries a 2 ct embossed green oval stamp with profile of George Washington, also has the Wells Fargo advertising, and the address is typewritten to W.H. Loheide, in Eureka, Cal. , whom we believe may have been a brewer. The return address is San Francisco. 3) Larger #10-size envelope addressed to Dobeer & Carson, Eureka, Humboldt Bay, Calif. It has the Wells Fargo advertising at top as well, the address is printed not handwritten, and the return address is from the same company’s San Francisco office. Postage is a 4ct red embossed stamp with an unidentified profile at center. To the left of this is a stamped cancellation from San Francisco, dated Mar.20.97. 4) A Wells Fargo & Co’s Express label, from Martinez, Cal. This is an orange rectangle with a sketch at center of a steam locomotive and its following rail cars on the track in front of a station. It measures 3.25 x 4.75,” is quite tattered and appears to have a second label of the same type glued over the original sketch at center. Framed in an 8 x 10” black wooden document frame with burlap background. 5) Two Wells Fargo Express Franks from 1904, guaranteeing free transportation of 50 pounds. Printer: Western BN Co. Blue with red and white print, each measures 1.5 x 2.5.” 6) Block of 4 Pony Express/Wells Fargo stamps, 25ct each, red. A Sheet Margin Block, no gum. Diagonal crease affects UL only. Scott No. 143L9.
