Extremely rare cover. This is a post office envelope with overprinted Wells Fargo express bar next to the red six cent stamp. The cover has an orange Wells Fargo & Co. label showing it came from Genoa. Sent to CC Batterman in Carson City, who would later be a prominent mine superintendent on the Comstock (Gould & Curry, Imperial Mines). 4 x 8.5" Opened roughly on right. In 1862, Wells Fargo began a Pony Express service after torrential rains made stagecoaches between Nevada Territory mining camps impractical. The orange label on this envelope indicates it was a stagecoach-carried, pre-Wells Fargo Pony envelope from Genoa.
