Wellesley, Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) British soldier and statesman; one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century. He is best remembered for leading the allied army which, with Blücher's Austrian troops, defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Autograph letter signed "The Duke of Wellington" in the text, 1½ pages, Strathfieldsaye, 6 March 1836. The Duke regrets that since he lives out of town, he cannot receive the deputation. He is engaged to receive the members of the Dover Harbor Commission at his home for dinner on the 16th. Accompanied by the 1911 catalog of Oakley, Fisher & Co., London, in which this letter was lot 64.
