Well documented Smith and Wesson New Model No. 3
Description: SN 13780 having belonged to Mexican Revolution General Pancho Villa. Engraved with his birth name Doroteo Arango on the backstrap, formerly in the William M. Locke collection, documentation includes the original 1936 letter and envelope to William Locke from J.M. Edelbrock of Edelbrock Saddlery Ft. Worth Texas offering the gun to him for $100. after Lockes friend Charles Nordin saw it in the shop. It is interesting to note that in Lockes book Nordin is given credit for starting him in collecting guns. The letter further states Edelbrock made cartridge belts for Pancho Villa’s army and left the gun to be fixed, later raiding nearby Columbus, NM never returning to pick it up. Additional documentation includes copy of letter dated 1986 listing the gun as sold to P.E. (Piney) Goodwin from V.N. Stephen stating the gun had been on display in his museum in Virginia City NV. Until the 1970’s and a S& W factory letter recording the revolver as being shipped pain to M.W. Robinson, NY in 1881 for export. The revolver is Mexican engraved in full scroll coverage with nickel remaining in the flutes, rest of revolver shows a smooth natural gray brown patina, backstrap silver gray with areas of light pin prick pitting, engraved name in block letter. Ivory grips with loss and age crackling. Barrel and serial number markings sharp. Action functions properly with good timing and lock up, bore surprisingly good with some light erosion. The Edelbrock letter and envelope framed with photos of revolver as used in “Colts From Texas and the Old West” book by Jerry Hemphill. In todays world of true Old West or Frontier guns provenance is everything and this gun has it all!
