Weepah,NV - Esmeralda County - 1927 - Vista of Mining Town Photograph :
This is a nice photo of the Weepah boom that began in 1927. Photograph measures 4 ½”x2 ¾”, no matte, high contrast, and focus is sharp. There is a crease on the upper right hand corner. Photographer not identified. Weepah is located 26 miles southwest of Tonopah on the southeast slope of Lone Mountain. The reverse of the photo reads, “This is the big town of Weepah. My million is there too.” Gold was discovered in Weepah in 1902, but very little materialized from this initial discovery. In 1927, Leonard Traynor and Frank Horton, Jr. discovered promising specimens leading to the largest Gold Rush in Nevada since Rawhide (1907). Close inspection of the photograph reveals a major change from the early 20th century booms: automobiles parked by the tents. Weepah’s rush came by the auto, which was transforming American society by the 1920s. The boom was short-lived and most hopefuls abandoned their claims within a year. A silver mining operation remained in Weepah until 1938. The town-site lays abandoned.
