Here is a spectacular 3-piece soup tureen by Wedgwood (tureen base, lid and underplate). Although the design originated much earlier than the Aesthetic period, it would be a dramatic addition to a collection. The pattern is "Peoney", one of the earliest transferware patterns designed by Wedgwood. It dates to the first decade of the 1800's, when similar patterns (Water Lily and Hibiscus) were produced at Wedgwood. Peoney (Peony) was engraved by William Hales and Thomas Sparks. This later production dates to 1886, and the natural subject and the brown transfer color reflect the Aesthetic interest of the time.
The tureen bowl measures 13" across the handles and 8" wide. The height with the lid on is 8". The underplate is 14" by 11". The modelling is beautiful, from the finial to the scrolled handles, and the pedestal base. There is one small chip on the inner rim of the lid and minor glaze flakes. Two tiny hairlines (one is 1/4", one is 1/2") are on the rim of the bowl, but these are not visible with the lid on. Other than the above, the tureen is in excellent condition. The pattern is fascinating - I find myself very absorbed in following the intricate details. It is truly a visual feast.
Thank you for viewing my listing.
