This Wedgwood creamware pitcher features black transfer-printed nautical motifs executed in the style of early 19th-century Liverpool earthenware. One side illustrates a detailed three-masted sailing vessel at sea. The opposite side depicts a Mariner's Compass rose titled Come Box the Compass, surrounded by a foliate border and an illustrative scene of a figure on a shoreline. Below the compass is a historical inscription: Invented by Murphy a Dutchman AD 1229 first exhibited at Venice 1260 improved by Giora of Naples 1309 its declination discover'd by Hartman 1538. The vessel is finished with a hand-painted pink band at the rim and a light blue band at the base. The base bears two black printed marks: a circular mark for Wedgwood of Etruria and Barlaston, Made in England, and a smaller circular mark with a central square emblem stating Engraved by the Wedgwood Studios. Faint impressed characters appearing to be 11 C are present on the foot rim. This item was manufactured in England following the company move to the Barlaston site in the mid-20th century.
