Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Imperial Bowl, Poplar Trees Z4968
The exterior is rendered in the Black Lustre "Poplar Trees" design, a detailed and multi-layered landscape that includes tall green and orange poplars framing a scenic Italianate park. Elements include statuary, a fountain, a river spanned by a delicately arched bridge, and architectural motifs such as a viaduct and domed structures. The foreground presents a prominent rock formation while the background reveals trees in shades of purple, blue, and reddish-orange. These scenes are accentuated by swirling golden cloud patterns set against a shimmering black lustre sky. A gold "Cobble" bead motif encircles the lower body and footrim of the bowl. The interior features the "Woodland Elves V - Woodland Bridge" pattern in the Daylight Lustre palette, illustrating a fantasy woodland with a steep, arched bridge stretching over a stream surrounded by lush foliage. Numerous fairy figures are depicted in motion - dancing, flying, and playing instruments - amidst intricate tree groupings. At the center of the bowl is a vivid depiction of a nude mermaid with flowing multicolor hair, gazing into a hand mirror, framed by concentric decorative bands with geometric and foliate motifs in gold and polychrome enamel. Marked with the Wedgwood Portland Vase backstamp.
