We Sailed 2,667 Miles.... Ships letter
We Sailed 2,667 Miles.... Ship's letter, June 26, 1849, "Atlantic Ocean, 4565 miles from N. York, Latitude 2.46, Longitude 29.44," 4 pp., 7 -3/4 x 12, to Rev. Schanck, from W.L. Grult, on "the realities of a sea voyage...119 people on board...from Sandy Hook...wind kept breezing up...In 2 weeks, we sailed 2,667 miles, then a calm which lasted 4 or 5 days, part of which time we only made from 15 to 25 miles per day. The ocean was calm. We had fine swimming and bathing but kept a lookout for sharks... Often fell in with a school of porpoise... Fine entertainment. Then a fine breeze for a week...then got into what Captain calls the doldrums. The Barque is a poor sailor but she is a very dry vessele [sic]... ship Valcouver from New York bound for Canton came in sight and spoke to us...out 22 days...We were at that point out 30 days...made for much dissatisfaction...English Barque Ceylon came alongside us for provisions. Had been out 146 days from Ceylon bound for England...Expect to get to Rio in about 10 days...crossed equator...Our water is really short and very bad...Have kept a loge [sic] every day...." Highly interesting, easy to read account of the voyage. Fine.
