Assay Office of Waters & Co. 5252 J Street, Sacramento, CA, April 4, 1859, No. 9656, Certificate of Gold, deposited by D.O. Mills & Co. This receipt is printed in black ink on thin buff colored paper. It has a somewhat fancy vignette as far as gold deposit or assay receipts are concerned. Below the company’s name, which is curved at the top of the page, is a vignette of an equal arm balance scale held by a hand that is extending below a cloud with the rays of the sun in the background. The printer’s name is not known. This receipt is for “Mixed Dust.” Weight before melting: 125.31 oz. After melting: 121.41 oz. Fineness: .874, Value per oz: $18.06. Clippings: $11.09. Net amount after all costs and fees: $2,198.04. It is one of only approximately three in an identical format with Blake's partner Waters name inserted in the masthead showing Assay Office of Waters & Company. In red ink is the notation on fees and the names of the Forrest Hill merchants, Hardy & Kennedy, (William H. Hardy & Samuel S, Kennedy, Reference Placer County Directory 1861) at the bottom. This certificate is an example of some of the great rarities that were produced by the Hardy & Kennedy archive of Forrest hill during the latter part of the gold rush. Very Fine condition with normal folds and foxing. Extremely Rare R7. Size: 8.25 x 7.75 inches. Check the Numismatics section for other RARE Assay Office documents from California.
