American lawyer and politician (1920–1999) best known for his brief tenure as attorney general in the Nixon administration. Refusing to carry out Nixon’s order to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox, Richardson, together with deputy William Ruckelshaus, resigned his office during the notorious “Saturday Night Massacre.” TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, September 16, 1974. Letter to a collector. In part: “With the release of the June 23rd transcript, it soon became clear that President Nixon would be impeached and convicted and, thus, removed from office. In light of this fact, I believe Mr. Nixon’s resignation was in his own, as well as the country’s best interest. President ford has made an excellent start in healing the wounds of the past several years …” In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
