White,</B></I>” “<I>Thurgood Marshall,</B></I>” “<I>Harry A. Blackmun,</B></I>” “<I>Lewis F. Powell, Jr.</B></I>” and “<I>William H. Rehnquist,</B></I>” 8' x 6” card imprinted at the bottom, “<I>Bureau of Engraving and Printing.</B></I>” Warren E. Burger became Chief Justice of the United States on June 23, 1969. Associate Justices Powell and Rehnquist were sworn in on January 7, 1972. On November 12, 1975, Associate Justice William O. Douglas retired. The Justices who signed this engraving served together from 1972-1975. On July 24, 1974, this Court unanimously ruled that President Nixon must turn over the Watergate tapes; he resigned 16 days later. Light rectangular toning at perimeter of image and signatures from prior framing. A collector has lightly penciled the names of the justices beneath their signatures.
