The art of basketry has long been practiced by the People of the Great Basin. The environment required the inhabitants to create items that could be light weight, durable and be made from harvesting willow, sagebrush and other plants. The Washoe of California and Nevada moved during the summer and winter seasons, so the need for light and durable items was a necessity. Art movements of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, caused for Native crafts to be in demand for collectors. Basket wavers like Louisa Keyser, Lena Frank Dick and Dat So La Lee became well known crafters of detailed and artistic baskets. This basket measures 6.5" x 6." It features a zig zag like pattern with a ban across the top. This basket is from the Spradling Estate [ http://www.onlinenevada.org/washoe_basket_weavers].Spradling-Wingfield Estate HKA#62852
