George Washington document signed as President, dated 19 March 1793 from Philadelphia. Here, Washington appoints Samuel Vance to Lieutenant, in part. ''…That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Patriotism, Valour, Fidelity and Abilities of Samuel Vance, I have nominated and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate do appoint him a Lieutenant…'' Partly printed document is countersigned by Henry Knox as Secretary of War. Single-page vellum document measures 15'' x 19'' with an elaborate military motif at the bottom and an eagle engraving on top. Beautifully framed in gold with a dupioni silk mat to a size of ''32.5'' x 37.5''. Paper wafer seal intact. Lightly soiled and a somewhat light signature, overall in very good condition.
