<Our item number 86055><B>Washington, George.</B> &#40;1732-1799&#41; First President of the United States &#40;1789-1797&#41;. Autograph Letter Signed &#34;<I>G<SUP>o</SUP>: Washington</I>&#34; as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, 1p, 10½&#34;x7¾&#34;, &#34;<I>Camp at Cambridge 14 Sep: 1775</I>.&#34; Very good; archival repairs on verso lightly affect a few letters, including the top of the &#34;G&#34; in the signature. Holograph address panel on verso to Miss Anna Maria Clifton, Fourth Street, Philadelphia, with &#34;<I>Favourd by Captn. Willin</I>&#34; in his hand at lower left. Washington&#39;s red wax seal is intact. The letter is affixed at left margin to a larger sheet. Accompanied by a steel engraving of Washington.<BR><BR>Washington responds to a complaint by Miss Clifton that a letter written to her by her suitor, Capt. Paul Ellis, had been opened and read before reaching her. He writes: <BR><BR>&#34;<I>Madam, I am sorry that the cruel necessity of the time should cause you to receive a letter thro&#39; my hands, open, -- the only apology I can make for it is, that all Letters which pass the lines In, or out, of Boston, do, in consequence of general orders to the officers commanding at those Posts, undergo an Inspection; and that Captn. Ellis&#39;s Letter to you had met with this fate before it got to my hands. I have only to add, that with the greatest respect & esteem I have the honr. to be Yr. most obedt. & most Hble. Servt. G</I><SUP>o</SUP> <I>Washington</I>.&#34;<BR><BR>When Washington wrote this letter, Boston was in the fourth month of an eight-month siege. Washington was selected Commander in Chief on June 19, 1775 and received his commission and assumed command of the Continental Army in Cambridge on July 3, 1775, only two months and eleven days before writing this letter. It appears that the suitor, Capt.
