Washington, George - 1st Draft Fragment
<Our item number 119289>Washington, George. Autograph fragment from the discarded draft of George Washington's first inaugural address: "Justice, & unanimity in those States," 3/8" 7", n.p (Mount Vernon), n.d (1789). Very fine.

The fragment was part of a draft that Washington asked David Humphreys to write for his inauguration, which took place on April 30, 1789. Washington copied the speech in his own hand, some 73 pages, and sent it to James Madison for revision in January 1789. Little or nothing of the draft was used in the speech that Washington actually gave to the Senate and House of Representatives. When Jared Sparks began the job of editing George Washington's writings in the late 1820s, he concluded that there was no reason to retain the draft. James Madison, with whom Sparks corresponded, agreed. Sparks cut the address into small segments and gave them away to some of the many autograph seekers who sought a memento of the "Father of Ou r Country."
Estimated Value $4,000-6,000.

Our item number 119289
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
