<B>Washington Family Archive. </B></I> Huge collection of over 120 letters, documents, receipts, and envelopes relating to the family of George Washington. Includes:<BR><BR>(1) Autograph Letter Signed: "<I>Fielding Lewis</B></I>", 2.5 pages, 6.5" x 8". No place, September 15, 1779. To his son, Capt. Fielding Lewis. Heavily stained. Fielding Lewis (1725-1781) married Catharine Washington, daughter of George Washington's uncle John, in 1746. She died in 1749. In 1750, he married Catherine's first cousin, Betty Washington (1733-1797), George Washington's sister. Their first child, Fielding, Jr., was born in 1751. The letter concerns a horse purchased by Fielding, Jr. which was supposed to be paid for in wheat.<BR><BR>(2) Manuscript Deed Signed: "<I>John A. Washington"</B></I>" and "<I>Eleanor L. Washington</B></I>", two pages, 7.5" x 12.25", front and verso. Alexandria, Virginia, August 28, 1856. Worn at folds, tiny holes and slits at folds. John and Eleanor Washington sell to David Dillon of Jefferson County, Virginia, land "<I>lying on the east side of the Shenandoah river and in the county of Jeffersonthe N.E. half of a 65 acre tract.</B></I>" for $200. When John's childless uncle, Supreme Court Justice Bushrod Washington, nephew of George Washington, died in 1829, John's father inherited Mount Vernon in Jefferson County. He died in 1832. In 1855, John's widowed mother transferred Mount Vernon to her son John. John was the last Washington to own Mount Vernon. To preserve it, he sold it to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858.<BR><BR>(3) Autograph Letter Signed: "<I>Burwell Bassett</B></I>", 1.25 pages, 7.75" x 10". Philadelphia, April 24, 1835. Integral leaf addressed to "Mr. Washington Bassett Fredericksburg, Va." With "Phila 24 Apr" postmark. Light paper clip rust stains at top, else fine. In 1785, George Washington's nephew, George A. Washington, eldest son of his brother Charles, married Frances Bassett,daughter of Martha Washington's sister Anna Maria Dandridge and her husband Burwell Bassett. Their son, Burwell Bassett, wrote this letter about his health to his nephew, George Washington Bassett. Burwell Bassett represented Virginia in Congress from 1805-1813, 1815-1819, and 1821-1829.<BR><BR>A varied collection, including letters written by and to members of the Bassett family, direct descendants of both George Washington's brother Charles and Martha Washington's sister Anna Maria. Worthy of further research.
