Washington, DC - $1 1875 Fr. 384 The German-American NB Washington, DC - $1 1875 Fr. 384 The German-American NB Ch. # 2358
An extraordinary note in all respects, and likely the most exciting note to surface among the many candidates in the Malcolm Trask holdings. It's been off the market since Mr. Trask obtained it as lot 207 of the T. James Clarke collection, which was sold by New Netherlands Coin Company in April of 1956. Although the cataloguer could not then have had the faintest inkling of just how rare notes from this bank would prove to be, nor how few aces would ever be found from any District banks, he did make mention that this this item was "decidedly rare," and in an era where even First Charters sold for a pittance, this piece cost Mr. Trask $95, a huge sum for any note in that sale. We now know that only two other notes are known (neither of which has been available for the past two decades) from this short lived bank, which was open for less than two years before closing in 1878, and that by 1916 its outstanding circulation had dropped to a miniscule $270. We also know that this is only the second Series 1875 $1 reported from any District bank (with this by far the nicer of the pair), and that this piece is only one of six other aces recorded from all District banks combined. Bright Very Fine-Extremely Fine, with an exceptional vivid overprint combined with unusually bright colors, a true wonder note worth whatever it brings tonight and more.
From the Malcolm A. Trask collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:18055
