Washington,CA - Nevada County - c1890 - Mule Train Photograph :
A view of a loaded mule train with one man standing on the porch and another on his horse outside a storefront. The photograph measures 10 x 8", mounted on a cardstock backing trimmed to the size of the image. Contrast is low , while focus is good. Although a tree obscures part of the sign, the words "Ole Helgesen" and "o-hing store" likely stand for clothing store. Both the upper right and left corners of the image and backing are missing, while each of the edges show wear. No photographer is noted. "Johnson Leonard with pack mules at Washington, Nevada Co Calif" is handwritten in pencil in an older style on the reverse, but cannot be verified. The village of Washington, located in the canyon of the South Fork of the Yuba River, about 20 miles northeast of Nevada City, is not far from the immigrant trail which is now Hwy. 20. A Washington South Yuba post office was established in 1852, discontinued in 1854, and re-established as Washington in 1862. Indiana Miners originally settled in the area in 1849, calling it Indiana Camp. The name "Washington" was adopted at a 4th of July festival in 1850. The village is located at what is called Washington Flat. (Ref: CA Geographic Names, Durham)
