First Governor-General of Bengal (1732–1818). LS, 17 pages on several sets of adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 9, December 31, 1777. Very detailed letter to his mentor, Laurence Sullivan (1713-1786), who worked in London for the East India Company, on the difficulties referred to it by Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818), his future accuser, prepares " […] Mr. Francis has not been idle, whatever may be his object in keeping alive the opposition. His talents are of a peculiar child, and he makes the use of those in which his greatest strength lies in inventing false Rumors & giving them in circulation in existing, opposition to Gov. [ernmen] t by secret Suggestions, & Friends at variance by setting Secret & Whispers incendiary […] In a Government as this is uncertain in its duration can not be great Exertions expected; but it possess great international Vigor; & wants florish in Spite of faction so long as those who attend it have the Rule of to the currency of its ordinary and regular operations, and no foreign enemy disturbs it.” A central vertical fold to each page, a few lines of text light, but completely legible due to decreased in flow, and some mild toning, otherwise fine condition.
