Fingerprint identification document, signed as president, one page, 7.5 x 7.5, September 22, 1921. This unusual document bears individual prints of all 10 fingers, as well as a set of four prints from each hand, notated at the bottom in type, “These fingerprints of the President were taken at the convention of the International Association for Identification, Washington, D.C.,” and signed in the lower right, “Warren G. Harding.” Archivally double matted and framed with a color portrait of Harding and a name plaque, to an overall size of 15 x 24.5. In fine condition, with a couple light creases and small tears, and expected light soiling.

The IAI made headlines at the aforementioned convention after meeting with Justice Deparatment officials to establish a National Bureau of Identification. Officials believed that they would be able to fight crime by creating a central organization with which officials of every part of the country could keep in touch. The plan achieved considerable attention from the highest level of the United States government, as members attending the conference were invited to the White House. It was during this meeting that inked fingerprints of President Harding, offered here, were recorded. A ‘new’ crime-fighting technique, fully endorsed by the chief executive.
