TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, May 2, 1921. Letter of explanation to congressman W. A. Rodenberg regarding the appointment of a public printer. In part: “I have wanted for some days to write you…relating to the appointment of a public printer…I am sorry of course, to have you disappointed. I did not form an unfavorable opinion of Mr. Ricketts…I did feel that inasmuch as there had been a controversy over his services a number of years ago that I had better avoid becoming a party thereto. Manifestly I could not appoint him without seeming to have taken up the cudgel in his behalf. I thought, therefore, I would be more free and comfortable by ignoring the old difficulty. I think I have made an excellent appointment and have no regret concerning the matter except such disappointment as I have brought to you and other friends of Mr. Ricketts…I hope this matter will not in any way permit a modification of your kindly opinion of me.” Matted and framed with a Pach Bros. portrait of Harding, to an overall size of 16.5 x 13. In fine condition, with some mild toning and foxing. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
