Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15 x 19, May 21, 1921. President Harding appoints Arthur MacArthur as "a Captain in the Navy." Boldly signed at the conclusion by President Harding and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby. The blue Navy Department seal affixed at the bottom remains fully intact. Tightly rolled and in very good condition, with light soiling, and dampstaining to the right edge (affecting appearance but not legibility). Arthur MacArthur III, the elder brother of General Douglas MacArthur, had served admirably during World War I; for his distinguished work in protecting the troop transports from German U-Boats in 1918, he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, and was promoted to captain. A desirable association piece.
