TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, March 3, 1923. Letter to R. Mulford at the Community Chest. In full: “I certainly am glad to express my commendation of the community chest program of raising the means to sustain the agencies of helpfulness in any community. It has been so thoroughly tried out in Cincinnati and other places that there can be no doubt of its efficiency, or of the fact that it represents a great improvement over the original methods of ‘individual drives for individual causes.’” In very good condition, with several extra horizontal folds, a uniform shade of toning, and some scattered light soiling.
Coming out of the postwar economic decline, Harding, who was decidedly conservative, was determined to make the federal government serve the US business interests, and by the summer of his first year in office an economic recovery began. Founded in 1913, The Community Chests in the United States were fund-raising organizations that collected money from local businesses and workers and distributed it to community projects. Just four months after sending this letter, with rumors of scandals within his administration, the president set out on a westward cross-country ‘Voyage of Understanding,’ in which he planned to renew his connection with the people, away from the capital, and explain his policies. On August 2nd, while in the presidential suite of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, Harding suddenly died while in the middle of a conversation with his wife. A spirited letter from the president promoting the giving back from business to the community.
