Interesting collection of three TLSs from Chief Justice Warren E. Burger to Lauson Stone, the son of Chief Justice Harlan Stone, plus an ANS by Harlan Stone. Burger's letters are on Supreme Court letterhead, dated from September–October 1978, and seek an autograph of Stone for the display in his chambers. The first, in part: "I have signed photos on my office wall of Chief Justices Taft, Hughes, Vinson and Warren, and I would very much like to add your father. If a signed photo is not available, I would be pleased to have any other to round out those who served in this building. Taft did not, of course, but he was the one who made the separate building possible." The second letter requests an unsigned photo of Stone, and the third offers thanks: "Many thanks for the photograph of your father. We are searching for a 'stray' signature in the Clerk's files and soon we will have this photograph hanging with Taft, Hughes, Vinson and Warren. In time, I will pass them on to my successor." Also includes an ANS signed "H. F. Stone" on an official Supreme Court card. In overall fine condition.
