War of 1812 Presentation Walking Stick
War of 1812 Presentation Walking Stick Inscribed to a Crewman on Commodore Perry’s Brig Niagara. Just over 34” in length with a classically tapered shellacked wooden shaft, fitted at the foot with a tapered alloy and iron ferrule. But, most importantly, the head of the walking stick is an attractively formed hexagonal silver head exquisitely period engraved on each of its side panels: “From the Niagara - By Com. O. H. Perry at - the battle of Lake Erie - Sept. 10. 1812 - We have met the enemy and they are ours. - Don’t give up the Ship.” On the 1.25” crown is the presentation: “A. M. Norton - from his Son in law - A. C. Getchell”. Research indicates that an Andrew Norton was listed as an ordinary seaman aboard the Niagara. For those who complain that modern Americans have a poor grasp of our historical events, it is important to note that Norton’s son-in-law (or the engraver) mistakenly placed the battle in 1812 instead of the correct 1813. The Battle of Lake Erie was a pivotal event in the War of 1812. On September 10, 1813 Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry met the British fleet near Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Perry’s first ship, the Lawrence, was badly damaged in the battle forcing Perry to transfer to the Niagara. He sailed into British battle lines and forced their surrender. In the aftermath, Commodore Perry wrote his famous report to General William Henry Harrison: “We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop.” The walking stick comes with a wealth of photocopied reference material which will provide many pleasant hours of research. This is a beautiful memento of an important event in early United States history, in fine condition.

Shipping: Bats, Clubs, Sticks, Swords, Rif (view shipping information)
