War axe circa 1500 to 1650, head measures approx. 6” from blade to back, by 5-1/4” from end to end of metal surface. The blade shows maker or armorer’s stamp “IS” and shows a Germanic form with flattened hammer back. The ax is mounted on a period shaft with flattened sides. The total measures 42”, the shaft measures approx. 1-3/4” across the flat. The head shows some battle marks, minor pitting and erosion, but generally good for its age. The shaft is a darkened hardwood and is also good with some slight worming, small losses, chips, mars, etc., but is definitely genuine to the axe. There is a Museum of New York cartouche. Provenance: Collection of John Elliott Sr, York, PA. Purchased by him Parke Bernet Galleries, 1962 Est: $1,500 - $3,000
