German physicist (1864–1941) known for his theories behind the calculation of chemical affinity as embodied in the third law of thermodynamics, for which he won the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. TLS in German, signed “W. Nernst,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, no date. Letter to physicist Stefan Meyer (1872–1949), an important pupil of Boltzmann and pioneer of research into radioactivity, later director of the internationally renowned Vienna Institute for Radium Research, on a celebration in honor of Ludwig Boltzmann. In part (translated): "Thank you very much later for your kind letter on the 23rd of May: under such circumstances it seemed to me more correct to give up the journey to Vienna…Hopefully your evening will be tomorrow for all and especially for the beloved Jubilarian's satisfaction!" In fine condition.
