Walter Piehl, Jr. Pencil Sketch, bareback study
Presented in this lot is the Walter Piehl, Jr. Original Signed Pencil Sketch, "bareback study", 1994, Western Americana. Raised in rural North Dakota, Piehl grew up around horses on the family farm. With his artistic talent, the former bronc rider has paralleled and outdistanced his former farm and later rodeo activities. His expressionistic style defies preconceived notions of cowboy art. He doesn’t capture the single moment of a horse bucking, back legs skyward. He seemingly slows down the lightning-fast action, capturing it in a kind of multiple-exposure blur that conveys all the movement leading up to and through the moment. Piehl’s work hangs in museum shows and in permanent collections around the country, including the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Minnesota; Museum of Art in Minneapolis; and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. This amazing pencil sketch is mounted in a matted metal frame. Visible art measures 10.75"W x 13.75"L, frame 18.25"W x 21.25"L x .75"D, weight 3lb, 4oz.
