The first edition dates to 1887. Pages and binding remain tight and firm, no markings on text other than age discoloration. An inscription and the author's signature is on the inside front cover. Portrait of General Lane frontispiece. Through page 114 the book is the personal recollections of Gen. Lane (1817-1892). The Addendum (pages 131 to 180) consists of additional biographical/historical information contributed by Gen. Lane's niece. Pages 7 to 82 cover the War for Texas Independence beginning with Lane going out from Wheeling, Va. in the fall of 1835, continuing with the Battle of San Jacinto, then in Texas up to and including the Mexican War. Pages 83 to 114 cover Lane in the Civil War going from his home in Marshall, Texas and into the Third Texas Cavalry. Pages 115 to 129 provide a sketch of the complete life of General Lane by Victor M. Rose. Following page 136 is a plate of the battle flag of the 3rd Texas Cavalry Regiment.
