Walter Lantz - Cartoon Illustration (1926). In addition to creating "Dinky Doodle" for the John Bray animation studio, Walter Lantz also worked as a gag writer for Mack Sennett, famous for creating the "slapstick" film. All those tossed pies you saw in countless Three Stooges and other films had their roots in early "Keystone Kops" and other Sennett comedy shorts. In this fine-line pen-and-ink with blue pencil drawing, Lantz shows himself to be on the cutting edge of that style of comedy. The art is signed in ink by Lantz; the date has been penciled in as "26", but may in fact been a bit later, as Lantz was known to be at the Bray studio until 1927, moving on to Sennett after Bray closed his shop at that date. At any rate, this is a very rare early example of Lantz art, as he would soon turn his attention to running his animation studio, leaving the drawing to other hands. The art measures 11.5" x 8", and has been nicely matted and framed to an overall size of 22" x 19". In Very Good condition.
