Collection of 34 letters of condolence, both TLSs and ALSs, sent to Huston’s wife Nan Sutherland Huston, after Walter’s passing on April 7, 1950, sent by various stars of the stage and screen, writers, and other notables, most dating between April and May 1950. Signers include; Katharine Hepburn, Agnes Moorehead, Theda Bara, Lillian Gish, Paul Kohner, Alan Napier, John Huston, William Morris, Mary Wickes, and Millard Tydings. A small sampling of the letters include: Katharine Hepburn: “I wish that there could be something which I could do or say that could be some real help to you…I think of your coming backstage so short a time ago & how gay you and Walter looked together & how happy you made me fell about the play”; Agnes Moorehead: “Walter was so appreciated both as actor and man—his wise encouragement that he often gave me–I will always cherish”; Theda Bara: “Walter’s passing was a shock—aside from his great talent and achievements, he was such a dear human being. I think you both expressed the best of all philosophies in your daily life ‘Live & Let Live.’” All the letters are accompanied by their original mailing envelopes. Also included is an unsigned personal calling card from Howard Hughes, in a small envelope (probably delivered with flowers), addressed in another hand to Huston’s wife. In very good to fine overall condition. A fitting tribute to the patriarch of the Huston family.
