Walter Camp signed and inscribed copy of ''The Substitute: A Football Story.'' New York: D. Appleton and Company: 1908. Ink inscription reads in part: ''To Miss McCarthy / With compliments of the author / Walter Camp...'' Outstanding text by the Yale Football Coach, who helped popularize the game of football and shape its rules. Camp transformed the game by cutting the number of players from 15 to 11, designing the gridiron field pattern and instituting the quarterback position. Volume in very good condition.
