Controversial lieutenant general who was in command of the Hawaiian Department of the United States Army at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Although he was removed from duty and demoted in rank, it was later thought by some historians that he may have been scapegoated by his superiors. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, October 16, 1944. Brief letter to an admirer. In full: “I am sorry that I have not a photograph available to send you. At present I am making no statements to the press and for that reason do not feel that I can express an opinion on the Boy Scouts.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a uniform shade of toning, and paper loss to left edge.
