Walt Kelly - Original Comic Strip Art for Pogo,
Walt Kelly - Original Comic Strip Art for Pogo, Group of Two Dailies dated 3-17-52 and 3-18-52 (Post-Hall Syndicate, 1952). One of the finest comic strips ever to grace the printed page, Pogo was a deft blend of slapstick humor, incisive social commentary, and a unique approach to language. Originally a foil for headliner Albert the Alligator in such obscure venues as Dell's Animal Comics (1941), Pogo made his newspaper debut on October 4, 1948 in the New York Star. Soon after, the Star folded, but creator Walt Kelly, who had begun to work his political views into what many still assumed was a children's medium, shopped the strip around and finally found it a home with the Post-Hall Syndicate, which issued the first Pogo under its banner on May 16, 1949. Kelly continued to both write and draw the strip, which eventually featured caricatures of President Dwight Eisenhower, Joseph McCarthy, Josef Stalin, and other topical figures, lending the strip a more highbrow air than its contemporaries. Like the work of Winsor McCay, George Herriman, Jay "Bullwinkle" Ward, and Chuck "Bugs Bunny" Jones, Pogo worked on a variety of levels, so that adults and children found it equally amusing, but in different ways. It's that level of sophistication that has kept the strip vital and amusing to this day, thirty years after Kelly's death and the end of Pogo on the comics page. The two consecutive strips offered here are choice pieces, featuring Pogo, as well as Churchy La Femme and Bun Rabbit, in a pointed parody of landlord/tenant disputes. Each strip has an image area of approximately 16.25" x 4.5", and each is in excellent condition. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
