TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 31, 1955. Letter to Andrew Ospring of Burbank, California. In full: “Thank you for your letter telling me of your father’s interesting career in railroading. We are in the throes of doing a railroad picture - THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE - which is a factual story and dates back to the Civil War period. This picture will be photographed down in North Carolina and Georgia on a short line called the Tallulah Falls Railroad. Shooting will start within a couple of weeks. In view of the above, we could not be interested in the material you write us about, however, we do appreciate your interest in bringing it to our attention.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of very faint toning, and several staple holes to top left. Accompanied by a clipped magazine article featuring an image of the letter and information on the film.
Disney’s love for trains was the impetus for this motion picture, based on the ‘Great Locomotive Chase’ that occurred in 1862. The film—which was shelved temporarily in 1953 so that the studio could concentrate its efforts on making 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea—was eventually released in 1956 and starred Fess Parker as the leader of a group of Union soldiers who go undercover behind Confederate lines as part of a covert mission to destroy Southern railroad tracks, bridges, and telegraph lines on their way back to the north. One of the studio’s early live action films involving one of Disney’s most beloved personal hobbies.
